Zomato Scraps Green Uniform for Pure Veg Fleet
March 20, 2024 | by indiatoday360.com
In a swift about-face, Indian food delivery giant Zomato has abandoned its plan to introduce green uniforms for its “Pure Veg Fleet.” The decision, announced on Wednesday by Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal, follows a wave of online criticism suggesting the color-coded system could be discriminatory.
Backlash Erupts Over Uniform Policy
Zomato’s “Pure Veg Mode” service, launched to cater to strictly vegetarian customers, included a dedicated delivery network for vegetarian orders. However, the initiative to distinguish these riders with green uniforms backfired spectacularly. Social media users expressed concerns that the green uniforms might lead to the exclusion of non-vegetarian riders from certain housing societies or religious communities.
Red Uniforms for All: Maintaining Inclusivity
Responding to the public outcry, Zomato announced that all delivery personnel, irrespective of the type of order they carry, will now wear the company’s standard red uniform. While a separate vegetarian fleet will still be in place to ensure vegetarian orders are prepared and delivered following strict vegetarian protocols, these riders will not be visually identifiable on the streets. Customers can, however, verify if their vegetarian order will be delivered by a Pure Veg rider through the Zomato app.
Prioritizing Inclusivity in a Diverse Market
Goyal’s announcement emphasized Zomato’s commitment to inclusivity. The company aims to ensure that all delivery partners are treated equally and have unrestricted access to deliveries across all areas. This decision by Zomato underscores the growing importance of social sensitivity for businesses operating in India’s diverse market. By prioritizing inclusivity, Zomato can not only avoid alienating a segment of its workforce but also foster a more tolerant and equitable work environment.
