Telecom Regulator Proposes Embedded SIMs for IoT

India’s Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRAI) has taken a bold step towards bolstering security and accelerating the adoption of 5G technology in the Internet of Things (IoT) sector, a market projected to reach a staggering $1 trillion by 2035 . Their recent recommendations propose a mandate for converting embedded SIMs (eSIMs) within imported IoT devices, potentially impacting millions of devices currently operating in the country.

TRAI’s proposal recommends that all eSIM profiles in imported devices utilizing international roaming must be switched to communication profiles offered by Indian telecom service providers (TSPs) within six months of activation or a change in device ownership.
