A joint venture (JV) between state-owned Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) and Salasar Techno Engineering Limited (STEL), a private steel player, has secured a transmission project worth around Rs 60 crore ($7.15 million) in Rwanda. This win marks a significant stride for RVNL, a company traditionally focused on developing railway infrastructure within India. The project award highlights RVNL’s growing expertise in the transmission sector and its strategic push into the African market.
Project Details and Importance for Rwanda
The project, awarded by Energy Development Corporation Limited (EDCL) of Rwanda, involves the design, supply, and installation of a 45.8 km, 110 kV double circuit transmission line connecting Rukarara, Huye, and Gisagara. With a targeted completion timeline of 18 months, the project is a crucial component of Rwanda’s Transmission System Reinforcement and Last Mile Connectivity project (TSRLMC).
This initiative is central to Rwanda’s national development agenda, aiming to address the country’s growing energy demands. The new transmission line will significantly bolster the Rwandan electricity grid. Improved grid stability will enhance access to electricity in the Rukarara, Huye, and Gisagara regions, benefitting households and local businesses alike. Reliable electricity access is a cornerstone for economic development, fostering the creation of new industries and job opportunities in the project areas.
Broader Implications: India-Africa Collaboration
The RVNL-Salasar JV’s success in Rwanda is a prime example of India’s deepening collaboration with African nations in the infrastructure sector. This project serves as a stepping stone for further Indian participation in Rwanda’s development endeavors, fostering a mutually beneficial relationship. India’s expertise in infrastructure development, coupled with Rwanda’s commitment to growth, presents exciting prospects for future collaborations across various sectors.
This win for the Indian JV could also pave the way for similar opportunities in other African countries grappling with infrastructure deficiencies. With a growing focus on renewable energy in Africa, Indian companies with experience in transmission projects could find themselves in high demand across the continent.
