Adani Green Energy Activates 1GW Solar Park in Gujarat

March 11, 2024 | by indiatoday360.com

Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL), India’s largest renewable energy company, has achieved a significant milestone by operationalizing 1,000 MW (1 GW) of solar energy capacity at the Khavda renewable energy park in Gujarat. The company plans to develop 30 GW of clean energy at Khavda over the next five years, making it the world’s largest renewable energy installation.

The Khavda renewable energy park spans a staggering 538 sq km of barren land, five times the size of Paris. The project is expected to generate ~81 billion units of electricity annually, power 16.1 million homes, create over 15,200 green jobs and avoid 58 million tonnes of CO2 emissions. The project will also support India’s goal of achieving 500 GW non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030 and carbon neutrality.

AGEL delivered 1,000 MW in less than 12 months of commencing work at Khavda, involving installing approximately 2.4 million solar modules. The company leveraged its expertise in developing large-scale renewable projects, its robust supply chain network and its technological prowess to overcome the challenges of the arid and remote terrain of the Rann of Kutch. AGEL also deployed innovative solutions such as waterless cleaning robots for the solar panels and drone-based monitoring systems for the plant.

Gautam Adani, Chairman of Adani Group, said, “Adani Green Energy is creating one of the world’s most extensive renewable energy ecosystems for solar and wind. Through bold and innovative projects like the Khavda RE plant, AGEL continues to set higher global benchmarks and rewrite the world’s planning and execution standards for giga-scale renewable energy projects.”

The Khavda RE park is part of AGEL’s vision to become the world’s largest renewable energy company by 2030 with a portfolio of 45 GW. The company currently has an operational capacity of 9,478 MW and a total portfolio of 20,844 MW. AGEL has also committed to invest over $15 billion in renewable energy projects in India over the next decade.

The Khavda RE park will contribute to India’s leadership in renewable energy and climate action. India is the third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the world, but also one of the most ambitious countries in terms of renewable energy targets. India aims to achieve 175 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2022 and 450 GW by 2030. The Khavda RE park will help India meet its commitments under the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals.
