AI Technique Predicts Fatal Heart Rhythms: Study

A recent study published in the European Heart Journal – Digital Health brings promising news for early detection of ventricular arrhythmia (VA), a potentially fatal heart rhythm disorder. Researchers at the University of Leicester in the UK developed an AI tool called VA-ResNet-50 that can analyze electrocardiograms (ECGs) and predict a person’s risk of VA with an impressive 80% accuracy.

Early Detection Can Save Lives

VA is characterized by rapid and irregular heartbeats originating in the ventricles, the heart’s lower chambers. This can lead to a sudden drop in blood pressure, causing dizziness, fainting, and even sudden cardiac death if left untreated.

According to the American Heart Association, nearly 350,000 sudden cardiac deaths occur in the US annually, with VA being a significant contributing factor. Early detection is crucial for preventing these tragedies.

“Current methods for identifying patients at risk of VA aren’t precise enough,” explains Professor Andre Ng, lead researcher and Head of Department of Cardiovascular Sciences at the University of Leicester. “This often leads to missed diagnoses and unnecessary treatments, or conversely, delays in life-saving interventions like implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs).”

AI Offers a New Lens on Heart Health

VA-ResNet-50 analyzes routine ECGs, a painless test that measures electrical activity in the heart. The study involved analyzing ECG data from 270 adults, some of whom later experienced VA events (on average, 1.6 years after the initial ECG). The AI tool effectively analyzed “normal” heart rhythms, identifying hidden patterns that increased the risk of VA.

“The AI identified patients at high risk with remarkable accuracy,” says Professor Ng. “Those flagged by the tool had a three times greater risk of a lethal event compared to the control group.”

Beyond Accuracy: Personalizing Care with AI

This study highlights the potential of AI to revolutionize cardiac care. Early and accurate detection of VA can allow doctors to personalize treatment plans. For instance, high-risk patients might benefit from medications or preventative measures like ICD implantation, while low-risk patients could avoid unnecessary procedures and medications. This personalized approach could significantly improve patient outcomes and reduce healthcare costs.

Looking Forward: Validation and Real-World Implementation

The researchers emphasize the need for further validation in larger clinical trials before widespread adoption of VA-ResNet-50. “This is a significant step forward,” concludes Professor Ng. “We are optimistic that AI can become a valuable tool in the fight against heart disease, but larger studies are needed to confirm its effectiveness in real-world settings.”

The successful development of VA-ResNet-50 opens doors for further exploration of AI applications in cardiology. Researchers are looking at incorporating AI into other heart rhythm analyses, potentially leading to earlier detection of various heart conditions. With continued research and development, AI has the potential to transform preventative care, improve treatment efficacy, and ultimately save countless lives.
