Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has been appointed as the chairperson of the opposition bloc INDIA, which comprises 28 parties that are opposed to the ruling BJP-led NDA government. The decision was announced after a virtual meeting of the INDIA leaders on Saturday, January 13, 2024.

Nitish Kumar rejects convenor post

According to sources, Bihar Chief Minister and JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar rejected the post of convenor of the INDIA alliance, saying that he would accept it only if all the parties were in agreement. He also backed Congress to lead the alliance, saying that it was the largest and oldest party in the country.

INDIA bloc aims to challenge BJP in 2024 elections

The formation of the INDIA bloc is seen as a major step towards challenging the BJP in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, scheduled to be held in April-May 2024. The bloc aims to present a united front against the Modi government on various issues such as farmers’ protests, inflation, unemployment, communal violence and corruption. The bloc also hopes to attract more regional parties and civil society groups to join its ranks.
