Goa, the popular tourist destination in India, is known for its pristine beaches, vibrant nightlife and rich culture. But soon, it may also become a hub for remote workers who want to combine work and leisure in a tropical paradise.
The Goa tourism department has announced that it will soon launch co-working spaces on some of its beaches, where visitors can work from laptops, tablets or smartphones while enjoying the scenic views and amenities. The co-working spaces will be equipped with high-speed internet, power backup, air conditioning, lockers, showers and cafeterias.
The project, called Sea Hub, is part of the state’s initiative to promote regenerative tourism, which involves engaging the local community, culture, cuisine and environment in the tourism sector. The tourism department also plans to offer nomad visas to attract long-term visitors who can work and live in Goa.
According to Sanjeev Ahuja, the state tourism secretary, the co-working spaces will be set up at 12 beaches across Goa, starting with Morjim, Ashwem and Miramar in the first phase . He said that the project will cater to tourists from Europe and other high-spending destinations who want to experience an all-round lifestyle in Goa.
“We want to invite more tourists specially from Europe and high spending tourists from other destinations by providing them an all round experience,” he said.
He added that the co-working spaces will also offer activities like surfing, yoga, hiking and cycling for the visitors who want to take a break from work and explore the natural beauty and culture of Goa.
The Sea Hub project is expected to boost the tourism industry in Goa, which has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. The state government hopes that by offering co-working spaces on its beaches, it will attract more tourists who will stay longer and spend more in the local economy.
The project is also in line with the global trend of workation, where people combine work and vacation in exotic locations. According to a report by Coworking Resources, a platform for coworking space owners and managers, there are over 1,000 co-working spaces in India as of 2024, and many of them are located in tourist destinations like Goa.
Goa is not the only place in India that is offering co-working spaces on its beaches. Kerala, another coastal state in South India, has also launched a similar initiative called Work Near Beach (WNB), where visitors can work from beachfront cottages and resorts.
With co-working spaces on its beaches, Goa is set to become a dream destination for remote workers who want to enjoy the best of both worlds: work and leisure.
