IIT-Guwahati Student Develops Affordable IoT Water Monitor

January 30, 2024 | by indiatoday360.com

A PhD scholar from IIT Guwahati has developed a low-cost IoT-enabled water quality monitoring device that won the Best Product Design Award at Vishwakarma Awards 2023. The device, named R-SAM-PRO, can measure multiple parameters of water quality such as pH, temperature, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, and conductivity. It can also transmit the data in real-time to a cloud server for analysis and visualization. The device costs around Rs 12,000, which is much cheaper than existing integrated water quality devices that cost more than Rs 2 lakh and are not IoT enabled .

The device was developed by Satyam, a PhD scholar from the Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering at IIT Guwahati, under the guidance of Prof. Sanjukta Patra. Satyam said that his product’s impact on social communities lies in its affordability, accessibility, and real-time data transmission capabilities. He added that the device can be used for various applications such as environmental monitoring, water resource management, smart agriculture, aquaculture, and industrial effluent treatment.

The device was awarded the Best Product Design Award under the category of Water and Sanitation at the Vishwakarma Awards 2023, which was organized by IIT Delhi in partnership with Maker Bhavan Foundation and the WIN Foundation. The competition aimed to identify and support the brightest minds in technology innovation from science and engineering colleges across India. The theme for 2023 was Water & Sanitation, Clean Technology & Smart Mobility.
