Congress declines invitation

The Congress party has declined the invitation to attend the consecration ceremony of Ram temple in Ayodhya on 22 January, saying that it is not a religious but a political event. The party also cited the reservations of the country’s four Shankaracharyas, who are the spiritual leaders of the Advaita Vedanta tradition of Hinduism, over performing the ritual in an incomplete temple.

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said that the party felt that going for a BJP event to inaugurate an incomplete temple would become a “political choice” and not personal one. He added that the Congress respects the sentiments of devotees who want to see the temple completed and consecrated in a proper manner.

BJP accuses Congress of disrespecting Hindu sentiments

The BJP has accused the Congress of disrespecting the Hindu sentiments and the Supreme Court verdict that paved the way for the construction of the Ram temple. BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said that the Congress was trying to create hurdles in the temple project and was playing vote bank politics.

He said that the consecration ceremony was not a political but a historic and cultural event that would mark the culmination of a long struggle for the Ram Janmabhoomi. He also claimed that the temple was not incomplete but ready for the installation of the idol of Ram Lalla.

Shankaracharyas express displeasure over incomplete temple

The four Shankaracharyas of Joshimath, Dwarka, Puri and Sringeri have expressed their displeasure over the consecration of Ram temple in an incomplete state. They have said that according to the scriptures, a pran pratishthan (life installation) cannot be done in an incomplete temple and it should be done only after the completion of all the structures.

They have also questioned the involvement of politicians and bureaucrats in the temple affairs and said that they should not interfere in the religious matters. They have urged the devotees to wait patiently for the completion of the temple and not fall prey to any political agenda.
