Karnataka Prohibits Artificial Colors in Gobi Manchurian

Gobi manchurian and cotton candy are two popular food items among many people in Karnataka. However, these dishes may not look the same as they used to, as the state government has prohibited the usage of artificial colors in their preparation. The decision was taken after the Food Safety and Quality Department found that the artificial colors used in these foods were harmful and unsafe for public health, especially children.

Health effects of artificial colors

According to the Food Safety Commissioner, prolonged usage of artificial colors in food and its consumption can lead to deadly diseases like cancer. The order also stated that the use of coloring agents like Rhodamine B, which are not permitted, were found in some samples of cotton candy. Rhodamine B is a fluorescent dye that is used for industrial purposes and is known to cause mutations and tumors in animals. The order also advised the public to avoid consuming food items made with artificial colors or to use them in limited quantities.

Legal consequences of violating the ban

The order further warned that any violation of the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006 rule 59 would invite severe legal action. The department can file a case in court which can lead to imprisonment from seven years to life term and fine up to Rs 10 lakh, officials said. The department also urged the public to report any instances of usage of artificial colors in food items to the nearest food safety officer or call the toll-free number 1800-425-1125.
