Discovery of New Anaconda Species: Eunectes Akiyama

What is Eunectes Akiyama?

Eunectes Akiyama is a new species of green anaconda, the world’s largest snake, that lives in the Amazon rainforest. It is genetically different from its cousin, Eunectes Murinus, by 5.5%, despite looking almost identical. It can grow up to 6.1 meters (20 feet) long and weigh up to 200 kilograms (441 pounds).

How was it discovered?

The discovery was made by a team of researchers led by Dutch biologist Freek Vonk, who encountered the giant snakes in Ecuador’s Yasuni National Park. The team was studying the impact of oil spills on the anacondas and other wildlife in the area. They collected DNA samples from the snakes and compared them with samples from other regions. They were surprised to find that the anacondas from northern Ecuador belonged to a new species that diverged from the other green anacondas about 10 million years ago.

Why is it important?

Eunectes Akiyama is an important indicator of the ecological health of the Amazon rainforest, as it is at the top of the food chain. It lives in aquatic habitats and feeds on large prey such as fish, caimans, deer and even jaguars. It kills its prey by constriction, wrapping its powerful coils around the victim and suffocating it. However, it is also threatened by habitat loss, poaching and pollution. The researchers found that some of the snakes they studied had high levels of petrochemical metals in their tissues, which could affect their reproduction and survival. The researchers also warned that the consumption of arapaima fish, which are also contaminated by oil spills, could pose risks to human health, especially for pregnant women.

The researchers hope that their discovery will raise awareness about the biodiversity and conservation of the Amazon rainforest, as well as the need for more research on these magnificent creatures.
