PM Modi Launches Mahtari Vandan Yojana for Chhattisgarh

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday virtually launched the Mahatari Vandana Yojana, a scheme to provide financial assistance of Rs 1000 per month to eligible married women in Chhattisgarh. The scheme aims to ensure economic empowerment of women, provide them financial security, promote gender equality and strengthen the decisive role of women in the family. The scheme will benefit around 70 lakh women who are above 21 years of age as of January 1, 2024. Widows, divorced, and deserted women will also be eligible for this scheme. The Prime Minister released the first instalment worth Rs 655 crore online in the accounts of around 70 lakh women in the first phase of the scheme.

Details of the scheme

The Mahatari Vandana Yojana is a unique and innovative scheme launched by the Chhattisgarh government with the support of the central government. The scheme will provide a monthly direct benefit transfer of Rs 1000 to the bank accounts of eligible married women in the state. The eligibility criteria for the scheme are as follows:

  • The woman should be a resident of Chhattisgarh
  • The woman should be above 21 years of age as of January 1, 2024
  • The woman should be married or have been married at some point in her life
  • The woman should not be receiving any other similar benefit from the state or central government

The scheme will cover around 70 lakh women in the state, which is about 80 percent of the total female population. The scheme will cost around Rs 8400 crore per year to the state exchequer. The scheme will be implemented through the Women and Child Development Department of the state government.

PM Modi’s speech

The Prime Minister said that the scheme was a fulfilment of his promise made during his recent visit to the state where he dedicated and laid foundation stones of projects worth Rs 35,000 crores. He expressed his gratitude to the women who joined the event from various locations and apologized for not being physically present. He also conveyed his prayers for the welfare of the citizens that he offered at Kashi Vishwanath Dham last night. He assured the women that they will get Rs 1000 every month as Modi’s guarantee. He said that when mothers and daughters get strong, the family gets strengthened and the welfare of the mothers and daughters is a priority for his government.

The Prime Minister highlighted the various initiatives taken by his government for women empowerment, such as providing pucca houses and Ujjwala gas cylinders in their name, opening Jan Dhan accounts for 50 percent of women, giving Mudra loans to 65 percent of women, benefiting more than 10 crore SHG women and making more than 1 crore women lakhpati didis. He reiterated his goal of creating 3 crore lakhpati didis. He also mentioned the Namo Didi programme that is changing lives and said that he will hold a major event on it tomorrow.

The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of family well-being and said that it begins with the health and dignity of the women. He said that his government is committed to ensuring the holistic well-being of every family.
