Tata Power Solar Completes India’s Largest Solar-Battery

Tata Power Solar, a leading force in India’s solar energy domain, has established a new industry benchmark with the successful completion of the country’s largest solar-battery project. This pioneering initiative, situated in Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh, integrates a 100 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) facility with a colossal 120 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS).

Monumental Project, Measurable Impact

Commissioned in March 2024, this solar-battery project represents a significant leap forward in India’s pursuit of clean energy dominance. The 100 MW solar PV plant leverages cutting-edge bifacial mono crystalline technology, boasting superior efficiency compared to traditional solar panels. This translates to a 15-20% increase in power generation by capturing sunlight from both the front and backside of the panels. The integrated 120 MWh BESS, one of the biggest deployed in India, plays a pivotal role by storing surplus solar energy during peak production periods (typically midday). This stored energy can then be strategically discharged during times of low sunlight (early mornings and evenings) or high demand (peak hours), ensuring a reliable and consistent supply of clean power, even during grid fluctuations.

The project is projected to generate an estimated 243.53 million units of clean energy annually, enough to power approximately 70,000 Indian households. This translates to a substantial reduction in carbon footprint, with projections estimating a decrease of 4.87 million tonnes of CO2 emissions over a 25-year period. Experts predict that this project can help India inch closer to its ambitious target of achieving 40% clean energy capacity by 2030.

Awarded by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) on an EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction) basis, this accomplishment showcases their comprehensive capabilities across the entire project lifecycle – encompassing design, supply of 239,685 high-efficiency solar modules, construction, testing, commissioning, and operation & maintenance. Notably, the project faced challenges due to unsuitable hard rock soil conditions and a remote location. However, Tata Power Solar’s engineering prowess ensured timely completion within the stipulated timeframe.
