Patanjali Offers Apology After Ramdev SC Summons
March 21, 2024 | by indiatoday360.com

In a move seen as an attempt to placate the Supreme Court, Patanjali Ayurved, the Indian ayurvedic consumer goods giant, submitted an official apology on March 20, 2024. The apology, signed by Acharya Balkrishna, the company’s managing director, comes a day after the court issued a contempt notice and summoned both Balkrishna and yoga guru Ramdev, a co-founder of Patanjali, to appear in person on April 2nd.
A Long-Simmering Dispute Boils Over
The current situation is the latest chapter in an ongoing saga between Patanjali, Ramdev, and the Indian medical establishment. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) had filed a petition with the Supreme Court alleging that Ramdev had orchestrated a “smear campaign” against the Covid-19 vaccination drive and modern medicine in general. This, coupled with Patanjali’s continued use of advertisements containing unsubstantiated claims about the curative properties of their products – despite a previous court directive in November 2023 to refrain from doing so – triggered the court’s strong reaction.
Uncertain Future for Patanjali’s Advertising Practices
While Balkrishna’s affidavit expresses regret for the misleading advertisements and assures the court of Patanjali’s commitment to adhering to advertising regulations, the full extent of the consequences for the company remains unclear. Legal experts anticipate that the court might impose sanctions or establish stricter advertising guidelines for Patanjali if they deem the apology and assurances insufficient.
This episode serves as a stark reminder for companies in the Indian healthcare sector, particularly those dealing with ayurvedic products, to ensure their marketing claims are grounded in scientific evidence and comply with legal regulations. The growing scrutiny on advertising practices in this sector underscores the increasing importance of transparency and consumer protection in the Indian healthcare landscape.
